Silvy Zhou
is a Chinese-American artist, naturalist, and equine caretaker.
As someone who works within the intersections of these seemingly distinct worlds, I am exploring the meeting points of art and science, information and intuition, craft and communication. My endeavors seek to define the core principles of ethical horse-human interactions— ways in which we can develop soundness, longevity, and ease in our domestic horses. With this goal in mind, I work to produce multifunctional artwork that is equally educational, honest, and thought-provoking as it is striking.
In my filmmaking practice, I gravitate towards stories of reckoning with forces bigger than oneself. The evidence of these forces are revealed in the mundanity, minutiae, and mystery of the worlds I compose— from a swarm of mayfly larvae persevering through polluted waters to the simple flickering of sunlight perfectly refracted through a window. These stories often grapple with the complexity of grief and are often told in conversation with a meditative but dark landscape.
My most recent film, The Watershed, can be seen in September 2026 as a selected short for Grrl Haus Cinema, and remains available for screening upon request.
