Diatoms: The Algae that Keeps Track

This zine was completed as a 2025 Vis-a-thon project in collaboration with Brown University PhD candidate Kristin Kimble, whose research focuses on marine sediments in the Southern Ocean and their ability to reveal the biogeochemical conditions throughout the oceans’ history.

 

This project was a true collaboration combining scientific imaging with puppet-craft and exploring academic lab culture with a fun and whimsical aesthetic twist. The zine produced from our time together offers a brief yet memorable introduction to the subject, utilizing images of the felted diatoms, which were created for this project as accessible tools to enhance public-interest and aid classroom teaching.
